Cook County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois, with its county seat in Chicago, and is the setting for most of the events of The Good Wife. It is the second most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County. Mainly urban and with a population of 5 million, Cook County is home to 40% of Illinois's population. Chicago is its largest city and makes up approximately 54% of the county's population. Cook County is heavily Democratic.

The State's Attorney for Cook County is in charge of all law enforcement in the Chicago area, making it a very powerful position. Peter Florrick and Glenn Childs both held the position.
